BBilly & Bully feature on the WW Legends Poster 1985 signed BW SB v1xilly Wright and Steve Bull are arguably the two most important players in Wolverhampton Wanderers' history. Billy played 105 times for England and helped take the club's name all over the world; Bully scored 306 goals for Wolves, the first few dozen of them at least at a time when we were feared there might not be a Molineux for much longer or indeed a team in the town to support.

Their colossal imprints on the Wolves story are generations apart, their respective paths coming together only when Billy returned to the fold in his twilight years to serve on Sir Jack Hayward's board of directors while Bully was busy accumulating another 100 goals or so. But there's a surprising amount of common ground in their football lives to fit snugly among happenings and facts that in other ways make them polar opposites. It's 70 years this year since Billy made his Wolves debut, 60 since he lifted the FA Cup and 50 since he played his last games for club and country. It also happens to be 20 years since Bully made his sensational goal-scoring England debut as a 50-plus-goals-a-season lower-division striker and ten since he was forced to quit. So many anniversaries. And the time somehow seems right to celebrate the curiously coincidental and yet sharply contrasting careers of two of Wolverhampton Wanderers' very finest. “Peter Knowles: God’s Footballer”

Peter Knowles - FINAL coverThe story of Peter Knowles is unique. The gifted, good-looking Wolves and England Under-23 midfielder seemed to have the world at his talented feet. He was tipped to be the English George Best but sensationally quit football after becoming a Jehovah’sWitness.  He was just a few days short of his 24th birthday.  Despite the pleas of his club, the players, friends, fans and family, Knowles would not change his mind and has always said it was the best thing he ever did.

In God’s Footballer, Steve Gordos recalls the shock waves created by Knowles’s decision and traces the rise to fame of this son of a Yorkshire miner, who became an idol to fans, old and young, male and female. The book details all the matches that Knowles played for Wolves and includes tributes and recollections from his teammates and from fans.  There are also team line-ups for each match of his first-team career.  September 2009 saw the 40th anniversary of Knowles’s final match forWolves.  Those who remember him as a gifted player whose best years were lost to the game, and those who have only heard the story second hand will be fascinated to read about the young man who turned his back on football fame and fortune.
