Well, the new lads settled in very quickly against Paul Ince's Blackburn - and a great goal from George Elokobi, a proper pen, a great one-on-one and a proper poacher's goal against England's #1 (ok ex #1) - there can't be many teams who had more than half their pre-season programme played against teams managed by ex Wolves favourite players or managers, but there were several wobbles when it mattered against the Pilgrims and Accrington Stanley. I suspect tomorrow's match will be the indicator for the season. Peter's travel news has all the latest information - be aware that the main line rail works are likely to cause disruption until the New Year, but contrary to press stories about cheaper tickets not being available, Peter has preserved the £17 Adult price and booked via Marylebone for Wolverhampton.
Preseason Hi everyone hope you're not suffering too many withdrawal symptoms from the lack of football... it's only a week to go, though, before the pre-seasons kick off at Wrexham. This set of matches intriguingly has thrown up encounters with a raft of previous Molineux favourites. A late addition to the list of Alex Rae (Dundee FC & the real player of the Premiership year), Graham Turner (Hereford), Mark McGhee (Motherwell) saw promotion winning Paul "The Guvnor" Ince leaving MK Dons to lead Blackburn Rovers straight into a friendly already set up at Moli on August 2nd a week before the season begins. Iggy Cartwright fundraising dinner Thursday 26th June. Ian's treatment continues - he's holding up well but still needs all the treatments. WAGGY'S TALES This is one of the best Wolves "biographies" I've ever read. You can just hear Waggy telling the stories... stories about his time in Gold n Black - from John Ireland bringing him in - on £35 a week, signing on Boxing Day 1964 and going straight into the team to play the Villa that day for Peter Broadbent's last match; through to his times running the Sports and Social Club, and Waggy's Bar. He tells how he - and the team - were taken around Los Angeles by his old Manchester born friend Davy Jones of the Monkees. He doesn't pull his punches - when talking about the domineering and obnoxious attitude of Bill McGarry - who wouldn't even let the players keep their Wembley tracksuits. He talks about the great Wolves players he played with - including Knocker Knowles, Dennis Law, the Wolves of the 60s and 70s, Doog's "This is Your Life", some "Crazy Keepers" including how Lofty survived being set up on Rye and Dry by Waggy and Mike Bailey. He talks about Wolves on their travels too, from LA to Europe to New Zealand. Included in the pictures are Waggy and Val and the 1967 team at our 40th Anniversary Dinner. Although there's always a chance that the run in might bring up a new hero (Kevin Kyle scoring a hat trick in every match through to Wembley perhaps) we have to close off the voting immediately before the Saints match (March 4th) so please either give your vote to Dave Slape on the train or in the pub, or you can vote on-line. If you have family membership - don't forget you have multiple votes. Matt Murray showed how much the players like the award when he was interviewed last week on Midlands Tonight.

Here's your Christmas present......attached is the latest London Wolves Newsletter (see note above), in two parts. Part 1 is the regular newsletter with messages from the Chairman, travel news from Peter, a tribute to Norm Deeley as well as Steve's match reports. Part 2 is the tribute to Doog which Stuart promised in the previous issue. Printed copies have already been despatched. Sorry for any delay in the softcopy version - I'm afraid I've been a little tied up by the Doog tribute DVD - Unforgettable Doog, and the printer again didn't provide a pdf file. If anyone's mail "bounces" because of file sizes I'll resend with a link. But, once again, a "tour de force" from Stef as acting Newsletter editor. I managed to avoid hearing the result while whitevanning around France so watched the recording "as live" and was delighted to see the substitutions salvage a point. It covers the post war period up to the end of 2006-7 season and has some great pictures. It contains footage from the 60s and 70s - the hat trick versus Hull, the 6-5 win against Frank Munro's Washington Whips, and Doog's goal against Brazil - plus interviews and appearances featuring the Doog from recent years - as CEO, that Kettering shirt, and on Question Time. It even includes a unique recording of Doog singing! We have included most of his funeral service (one piece with his sons, is, unfortunately not available). Running time is 2 hours 55 minutes so it'll give you something to watch on Christmas Day. It's not a biography, more a souvenir of and tribute to the Doog. -------November 2007 - Doog DVD; Win Wolves in Pix book Well, a third of the way through the season and we've spent very little time out of the playoff slots with even a few days in third. You'll be able to relive those matches very soon with the next London Wolves Newsletter, which will also contain the tribute to Doog which Stuart promised in the previous issue. I'll send a link for those of you who have asked for softcopy, while the printed ones should be despatched soon. Wolves this season has been a story of super effort - Michael Kightly being the epitome of this - but not being translated into goals and thus some frustrations coming out. And that frustration boiled over at Molineux on Saturday when only London Wolves' sponsored player Neill Collins got on the score sheet (to make him only one goal behind our top league scorers!) and then a sterling effort in defence from the back four to keep the three points. Mick was clearly upset by the frustrated crowd, quickly dashing down the tunnel at the end and then making his feelings clear to the fans in the radio interviews. Unfortunately, as we've seen before, especially in the Hoddle era, as soon as the crowd picks up around 23,000 then the support for the team seems to drop off. And on Saturday it probably didn't help that we could only draw against our last two opponents while they were being beaten 6-0 and 5-0 at the Tractor Boys and Wednesday. On a high note(!), the Elvis impersonator was described by Robbie Dennison, who now reports for Beacon Radio, as the best he's ever seen. He has nurtured a string of Internationals - especially Irish with Sammy Clingan doing well for NI and Robbie Keane captaining Ireland and becoming their all time leading scorer - as well as Welsh number 1 Wayne Hennessey and England's Joleon Lescott. Chris has accepted the first team coaching job under Gary Megson at Bolton Wanderers. It covers the post war period up to the end of 2006-7 season and has some great pictures. We're running the competition to publicise the launch of our tribute DVD to the Doog, and to seek support for WWLSC member Phil Bant's fundraising for the Dreams Come True children's charity. Phil ran the London Marathon in April and New York in November dressed as Superwoman (see the picture). Unfortunately he was ill in New York, but still finished the 26 miles for his sponsors, even though it took him an hour longer than his London time. The Doog DVD is to raise funds for Xpro, an organisation founded by Doog to help ex Professional Footballers who didn't make the sort of wages seen in the premiership financially through events such as the Iggy Cartwright Dinner. Doog was booked to appear at a tribunal in Hastings for a Portsmouth player but his untimely death came the day before. Norm Deeley We were saddened to learn that Norm had been found dead at his home - which at been his mother's house. He was known as "the diminutive winger" who took Blackburn Rovers apart in the 1960 Cup Final forcing the own goal (see picture) which started our scoring and then scored the rest himself. He starred for Wolves throughout the title winning 50s also won two England caps. There are plans to name the playing fields where he coached youngsters after him. I'm sure you'll all be delight to hear that a local businessman (Chris Massey) who runs large fundraising events has committed all their funds to Iggy - some £16,000! Football Aid The charity, strongly supported by Bully who is now an Ambassador for them, is again offering people the chance to play at Molineux against and with Wolves legends. The Official Wolves Quiz Book This, with a foreword by King John, will be published in February. As soon as we have details of how to buy we'll let you know, but I also hope to get a copy to give away as a competition prize. It's been put together by Chris Cowlin and Phil Solomon. Class of 2005,6 etc Just in passing, it seems ages ago that Rohan Ricketts was at the club, but he made a return appearance with Barnsley, while Darren Anderton has settled on the South Coast with Bournemouth. They drew Paul Ince's League leading MK Dons in the Johnsons Paint trophy quarter final and faced Keith Andrews - the club's captain and leading scorer! - Jemal Johnson, and Colin Cameron. Shame the Dons are out of the FA Cup - drawing Wolves in the third round would have been interesting. Alex Rae is player/manager at Dundee, while Mark Kennedy is still at the Palace. The Camarat is on loan at West Ham from Wigan. Nayls is still playing Champions League football with Celtic, while Kenny Miller (blamed for getting Nayls to Celtic at the time) has joined Derby County, but will be hoping to do it again for Scotland against the Azzuri. Top mover of course is Joleon Lescott, one of only two London Wolves Players of The Season to have won the trophy 3 times now, has been capped for England and is one of Everton's favourite players. Doog DVD Is almost complete and should be available before Christmas. It contains footage from the 60s and 70s - the hat trick versus Hull, the 6-5 win against Frank Munro's Washington Whips, and Doog's goal against Brazil - plus interviews and appearances featuring the Doog from recent years - as CEO, that Kettering shirt, and on Question Time. It even includes a unique recording of Doog singing! We have included most of his funeral service (one piece with his sons, is, unfortunately not available). Running time is 2 hours 55 minutes so it'll give you something to watch on Christmas Day. It's not a biography, more a souvenir of and tribute to the Doog. Some of the video quality does suffer from its age, like most of us! Profits from the sales will go to the charity to support less well off footballers which Doog founded - Xpro, the International Association for ex-Professional Footballers. Merlyn has obtained permission to include footage from the BBC, Sky Sports and ITV. --------August 2007 - Doog, funeral and tributes; Callum meets Matt Murray, Stef, AGM mins------- Hi everyone at last the season has started again, even if the live televised match didn't give us the result we needed.... but there's scope to emulate the Royals from two seasons ago especially after Sunday's gritty performance against the Owls! I thought Seyi's flick for the first goal against Watford was worthy of the Doog himself, who was saluted before the match. The announcer only got to "323 appearances and 123 goals" before the team and crowd were applauding....
A Load of Bull - Special Issue Doog Tribute The next issue, hopefully and significantly planned for the Hull match, will be a special tribute to Derek Dougan. If you'd like to contribute to this special issue then send your material to Charles Ross by September 3rd by email or royalmail From: aloadofbull <aloadofbull@blueyonder.co.uk> Send your submissions to this email or via snailmail at ALOB, PO Box 3483, Birmingham, B17 9SF Doog Funeral & Tributes Dave Hodges, Dave Slape, Robert Goddard, Alan Taylor and I attended the funeral service to represent London Wolves, while Irish member, and friend of Doog's, Vinny Coates flew in from Dublin that morning and was interviewed on BBC Midlands Today. You can see more of the funeral - over half of it is available as a webcast from the BBC. There is a link to that and other footage on our Doog page together with your tributes plus a short video of that debut hat trick Doog arrived in Wolverhampton in March 1967. At the time I was co-editing the college newspaper, The Marble, and a couple of the budding journalists had been hanging around Molineux hoping to interview one of the stars when they found this “tall thin guy walking round trying to find his way in”. Like all good hacks, they offered to show him the way in return for an interview. And the Doog, gracious as ever, gave them one. This exclusive was reprinted in the Express & Star as that week on March 16th Ronnie Allen signed Doog for £50,000. Two days later he was away at Plymouth, but, curiosity aroused, I had to go to the ground to see the home debut. That hat trick and one from Knocker sealed a 4-0 win on the way to promotion. Since I’d seen him arrive, I had to see him leave too. Doog made a spectacular arrival at the church in a gold and black coffin, with the Wolves emblem “Doog” and number 10 (although he started as #9 of course) – anyone who says he didn’t care about the Wolves proved wrong there and then. His coffin carried wreaths from Merlyn in Northern Ireland colours and in gold and black from WWLSC. Doog fell in love with Wolverhampton – he died at home in Tettenhall – so it was appropriate to start with “Bring him Home” from Les Miz. His pallbearers were his brother Dale, Phil Nicholls, sons Alex and Nick and former Wolves Vice Chairman Doug Hope plus our best winger ever, Dave Wagstaffe. Waggy said that, “of course, he’d volunteered to play left wing” (from where he’d supplied many of Doog’s goals), but on realising that the other pallbearers were taller and all the weight would be on him “dropped back into midfield”. Just eighteen months earlier Doog had carried his friend George Best to his grave – saying “George Best carried so many teams I was in that it was a pleasure to carry him today.” Typical of Doog’s generous spirit and wit. Chief minder inside the church was Frank Munro, who told the story of a Scotland v NI match, when the Doog went in hard on him. “He chased me for 20 yards and just hacked me down. Hey, Doog, what’re you doing, we’ve got a big game against Arsenal on Saturday?” “Matey, there’s no friends in this game” was Derek’s reply. This was a funeral which clearly was a celebration of his life with a packed church inside and out. Nick Owen, BBC WM, told how Doog had befriended him and helped him as a young journalist, and Wolves’ mighty skipper of the 70s, Mike Bailey described his career and impact on the team. From Terry Conroy – his great friend at Stoke City – who talked about how easy it was Doog and Peter Dobing to “pull the birds” at Blackpool with Doog’s Jag, of the All Ireland match against Brazil at the height of The Troubles, and of Doog being the original skinhead when he shaved his head at Aston Villa. Terry concluded with “Finally I can see him up there with St Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter would welcome Doog ‘cos he’d know him, wouldn’t he, who wouldn’t?
