2009 Masters

Wolves’ WinnersMidlands Masters defence of their titles started on Saturday 13th June at the NIA (our competition to win tickets was here) with venue and squads details are here.   Wolves won the final against Villa by two goals to one - it was  a very exciting and tense final, having earlier played out a four all draw.  We’re Bottom Again says it all about the Albion (although they did beat Wolves with a last second winner) when it didn’t matter while Birmingham were fairly poor.  The Blues-Baggies match was said to be one of the worst ever Masters’ match.   Villa starred Wolves’ fitness coach Tony Daley - who very sensibly missed every chance given to him against the Wolves, but they brought in Benito Carbone from Italy where he’s still playing, and he deservedly was man of the tournament scoring seven terrific goals, before Wolves defence managed to shackle him in the final. Many thanks to Will and the Masters organisers for the competition tickets and the winners’ photo.

The Wolves squad of Keeper Andy De Bont, Mick Gooding (Capt), Scott Taylor, Darren Roberts, Mark Burke, Andy Thomson, Michael Gilkes, Don Goodman and Phil Robinson go forward to the UK final in Liverpool in September.   You can book tickets for the Echo Arena here..

Middlesbrough – Bristol City – Tranmere – Rangers - Wolves - Leicester - West Ham – Man City  team details

The world’s most popular indoor football tournament draws to a dramatic conclusion on September 7th as eight teams do battle to decide the 2008 Screwfix Masters Cup UK Champions.

Since June, eight cities have played host to 42 teams, each vying to beat their local rivals and claim a coveted place in the knock-out stages. Nearly 400 players have graced the Masters carpet this year,  re-kindling the competitiveness that characterised their professional careers, all of them keen to write  themselves into the annals of Masters Football history.

Wolves represent the Midlands this year, after securing their fourth Midlands Masters title in July with a stunning victory over Aston Villa.

They face stiff opposition however, as this year’s Finals involve two former Masters Cup Champions in Rangers and Leicester. Indeed the East Midlands side go for their third UK Cup triumph in as many years, in a bid to become to the most successful Masters team in history.

Wolves are four time qualifiers twice finalists but runners up last year and 2004, and in last but one in 2006.   Time for that to change!!

Wolves old boys maintained their stranglehold on the Midlands Masters by completing a hat-trick of triumphs at the NIA over the weekend.  The veterans won the battle of the old boys for a third successive year – and how.  The Molineux old boys clinched the trophy in the over-35s with a 6-2 win in the final against Aston Villa, a victory that sent them once more into the Grand Final at the NEC on September 7.

Wolves came agonisingly close to the national title last year, beaten in a penalty shoot-out. Now they renew their quest for the main trophy with optimism now Albion, Villa, Walsall and the Blues have been dispatched.  Don Goodman led a Wolves squad that included keeper Paul Jones, Andy Thompson, Mark Burke, Mick Gooding, Phil Robinson, Scott Taylor, David Kelly and Darren Roberts.  They needed a late, late equaliser from the man famous for his St Andrew’s hat-trick to secure a draw against debut team Walsall.  The Saddlers, with old favourites Ron Green, Chris Marsh, Mark Rees and Adrian Viveash among them, were denied that victory and also lost 5-3 to the Baggies. Saddlers midfielder Andy Reece said: “It was still a fantastic experience. We were the oldest team but it didn’t show. “Ron Green was excellent in goal and our game-plan in the first match meant we were hard to break down and play against, as eventual winners Wolves found out. “They were free-scoring but had to wait until 20 seconds from time to find a way through us.  “We couldn’t do that in the next game, as we had to win by seven clear goals.”

The game Wolves followers would have enjoyed just as much as the final saw Goodman smash four goals in a 7-1 victory over Albion squad. The Baggies squad featured Tony Lange, Kevin Donovan, Wayne Fereday, Carl Heggs, Richard Sneekes, Sean Flynn, Daryl Burgess, Ian Hamilton and Roy Hunter. The final was settled early, as Roberts grabbed a hat-trick and Wolves burst into a 4-0 lead.  Quickfire goals from David Norton and Mark Kinsella raised Villa hopes of a comeback but a sublime chip from Goodman was the pick of the final, before Taylor rounded off matters.
